(Express) – Taiwan has been rocked by a shallow magnitude-6 earthquake, rattling buildings and bringing the city of Taipei to a halt. So is there a tsunami warning? The powerful quake struck the coastal city of Hualien at 1 pm local time on Thursday (6 am BST). Buildings shook and the subway services of Taipei were suspended. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that people living near the coast could notice some effects on sea levels, but a tsunami is not expected. The agency said: “Due to this earthquake, Japan’s coastal areas may observe slight changes on the oceanic surface, but there is no concern about damage.” The central government has set up a disaster reaction center to deal with the potential impact.
