(Express) – Historic flooding has stuck Nebraska and nearby Midwestern states, killing three people and forcing thousands from their homes – and shocking satellite photos have revealed the devastating extent of the damage. The National Weather Service warned flooding is expected to continue across parts of the Central Plains and Upper Midwest for the rest of the week. More than eight million people are under flood warnings in the Midwest and the Mississippi River Valley.

At least five affected states have declared an emergency and are seeking disaster funding from the government. This rare weather phenomenon called a “bomb cyclone”, hit the western Rocky Mountains and US Central Plains last week.
