The army has been called in to help tackle an ‘unprecedented’ blaze on Saddleworth Moor with flames reaching 20ft high and terrified residents evacuated from their homes.  The massive fire, which has been burning since Sunday, is now visible from space. More than 100 firefighters on a total of 29 engines from the Greater Manchester and neighboring areas are trying to bring the fire under control. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Dave Keelan said: “We have been

liaising with a military advisor on the scene and following those discussions we have requested military assistance from the Ministry of Defence. “There’s still a lot of smoke from the fire but air quality levels are being monitored regularly in different locations. Air quality is currently at a safe level and therefore residents have been let back into their homes.” Incredible images from this morning show huge plumes of smoke billowing up into the air as the moor continues to burn.
