Typically known for its bright lights and costumed characters, Times Square became the meeting place for an inspiring gathering of Christians from all walks of life last weekend. Despite not exactly being a hotbed for people of faith, on June 3, some 14,000 people gathered at the so-called crossroads of the world for the conclusion of “Jesus Week”—a week-long series of events around Manhattan and the outer boroughs organized by Concerts of Prayer Greater New York (COPGNY), a network of pastors and churches who seek to encourage prayer across “ethnic, economic and denominational lines.”
According to Christian Today, Jesus Week began on May 27 and saw members of Concerts of Prayer ministering to and praying alongside the poor in needy throughout the city. Some $3 million in resources—including multi-lingual children’s books and DVDs—were also donated. The week culminated with the Times Square event that featured an afternoon of live music, scripture readings, and reflections led by various pastors and religious. “People said it was the boldest thing they’ve ever seen,” Pastor Dimas Salaberrios, head of COPGNY, told the Christian Post of the gathering.
