Reports indicate that a strong earthquake struck Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon resulting in the death of two and at least 36 injuries after a temple reportedly collapsed. This 5.1 earthquake was reported to have centered about 70 kilometers (44 miles) northwest of Yangon at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). The cause of deaths of the death two residents and 36 injuries was from a wall that collapsed belonging to a residential quarter from the strong quake.

Locals reported that the tremor was felt for about 30 seconds. Subsequently, According to records a magnitude 4.7 has shaken this same region in the past. There have been reports of at least 20 aftershocks following this event. The earthquake reportedly damaged some of the religious buildings in Taikkyi including a temple that collapsed.
