(by Kelly McDonald, Jr) In Portland, Oregon, a judge recently ruled that a 27-year old male student is allowed to be genderless. He will be designated as ‘agender’ on legal documents. Though his birth name is Patrick Abbatiello, he will now only go by “Patch”.

The student claimed that no current pronouns he has heard properly described him (neither male nor female). He said that his name is the only word that properly describes him. Unfortunately, this opens the door for people to make up whatever gender they wish. Further, it opens the door for gender discrimination. Will those who claim to be a gender eventually be targeted for discrimination by those that have no gender at all?
