Severe thunderstorms are possible early this week in parts of the South, mid-Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley, continuing what has already been a very stormy start to 2017. Just over two weeks ago, 79 tornadoes were spawned in eight states from Jan. 21-23 in what was the third-largest tornado outbreak on record in a winter month (December through February).

January’s preliminary tornado count of 130 tornadoes was the second most of any January dating to 1950. This week’s round of severe weather does not appear to have the magnitude of the tornado threat we saw in January, but a few cannot be ruled out.
