A single image showing a huge chasm in the earth illustrates just how devastating the New Zealand earthquake was to rural parts of the country. The photograph shows a crack running through a hill on farmland in Conway, near Kaikoura, following the 7.8 magnitude quake at midnight on Sunday. The farm is not far from where cows were left stranded on a small island of grass when the natural disaster destroyed the fields around them.

It comes as authorities have warned New Zealanders to brace for another large quake as gale force winds and flooding hamper the clean-up effort.  The country has been rocked by almost 800 earthquakes in the 24 hours since a massive 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Christchurch at midnight on Sunday.
