A federal appeals court ruled Monday that states which refuse to help resettle Syrian refugees would be guilty of illegal discrimination. This is clearly a judicial rebuke aimed at Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence, who, as Indiana’s governor, had tried to stop Syrians from being shipped into his state.

The Washington Times reports that Judge Richard Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit said there is no evidence that Syrians are more dangerous than other refugees, and even if they are, allowing Indiana to refuse to resettle them would only push the problem onto neighboring states. In other words, the federal government has declared that Syrians are no more dangerous than any other unvetted migrants from terrorism hot spots, but if they are, it’s your problem, states.
