The large quake struck early this morning around 50km north-northeast of the city of Moyobamba, home to more than 50,000 people. The Richter Scale marks 6.1 as “strong”, and capable of causing “damage to a moderate number of well-built structures in populated areas”.

There are no reports or any injuries or damage at this stage following the incident, which occured at around 11.08am GMT. The epicentre of the quake is located below deep rainforest, with observers hoping the impact of the quake will therefore be minimal.
