As We move into the peak of hurricane season, scientists are warning that we could see the strongest season since 2012, the year Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast. According to to a new report, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now expects a higher likelihood of a near-normal or above-normal hurricane season.

“We’ve raised the numbers because some conditions now in place are indicative of a more active hurricane season,” says Gerry Bell, lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. The NOAA reports a 70% chance of 12 to 17 named storms, of which five to eight are expected to become hurricanes, including two to four major hurricanes. This is an increase from the NOAA’s May outlook, which called for 10 to 16 named storms, of which four to eight were expected to become hurricanes, including one to four major hurricanes.

Yaw. Every year the weather folks give the same prophecy, the same doom and gloom, that never materializes. Perhaps they may “screw up” and get one right. The more technology they add, the further the mark is missed. We’ve all seen days where a 100% chance of rain or snow is predicted–then nary a drop nor flake. Then there’s a 0% chance and the bottom falls out or you have to shovel out. A better guide is the trusty Farmers Almanac. Maybe in the backroom, there’s a guy with a trick bunion, rheumatism, or lumbago. Who knows how they make their long-range forecast? What I see is God and the Farmer Almanac making great sport of the weather folks and their grandiose toys.
