BREAKING NEWS: Two strong earthquakes with preliminary magnitudes of 5.9 and 6.2 have struck near Quininde in northwest Ecuador, with shaking felt as far away as Esmeraldas, Santo Domingo and Quito, seismologists and residents say. The first earthquake, which struck at 9:01 p.m. local time on Sunday, was centered about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Quininde, or 51 kilometers (31 miles) south of Esmeraldas.

It struck at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.9, according to Ecuador’s Geophysical Institute, which initially measured the earthquake at 6.5. Shaking from the earthquake was widely felt throughout the region. FULL REPORT
