A strong earthquake (terremoto) with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 has struck near Chinandega in Nicaragua, with tremors felt in El Salvador, Honduras and as far away as Costa Rica, residents say.

The earthquake, which struck at 9:25 p.m. local time on Thursday, was centered about 17 kilometers (10 miles) east of Puerto Morazan, or 26 kilometers (16 miles) northeast of Chinandega. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a very shallow earthquake. READ MORE
