The Obama administration has a solution to its concerns that criminals are not being accepted into college at what it believes are appropriate levels. In a new policy directive to colleges, the Education Department wants colleges to accept individuals first, and then ask about any criminal record. The directive, “Beyond the Box:

Increasing Access to Higher Education for Justice-Involved Individuals,” was released last Monday. The publication, which tells colleges what they should and should not do and ask, said because there is insufficient data connecting criminal records with campus safety, there is no reason to ask about criminal records for campus safety purposes.
