The governor of North Carolina issued an executive order on Tuesday to help clear up what he believes is confusion and misinformation about a recently passed state law that annulled a controversial “bathroom bill” in Charlotte and banned other cities from passing similar ordinances. “I have come to the conclusion that there is a great deal of misinformation, misinterpretation, confusion, a lot of passion and frankly, selective outrage and hypocrisy, especially against the great state of North Carolina,” Gov. Pat McCrory said in a statement.

“Based upon this feedback, I am taking action to affirm and improve the state’s commitment to privacy and equality.” The executive order declares that businesses can enact their own policies surrounding restroom and locker room use, and that businesses and local municipalities can establish their own non-discrimination policies surrounding the employment of homosexual and transgender persons.
