The Daily Beast published a piece by author Rob Brotherton that explains “How the Illuminati Stole the Mind, Soul, and Body of Hip-Hop.” Brotherton authored a book about conspiracy theories, parts of which analyze the fact and fiction surrounding infamous secret society groups like the Illuminati. Brotherton’s Daily Beast piece paints a historical picture that explains the Illuminati’s heavy influence in hip-hip music, but ultimately admits that “most hip-hop artists don’t buy into the Illuminati theories.”

Brotherton points to an April 2015 interview where Kanye West flat-out accuses captains of American industry as the boogiemen controlling the world, not musicians and entertainers.

“If there was actually an Illuminati, it would be more like the energy companies—not celebrities that gave their life to music and who are pinpointed as decoys for people who really run the world,” Kanye West said. “I’m tired of people pinpointing musicians as the Illuminati.
