A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 has struck Argentina near El Galpon in Salta Province, seismologists say. The earthquake, which happened at about 8:33 a.m. local time on Saturday, was centered about 24 kilometers (15 miles) east-southeast of El Galpon, or about 124 kilometers (77 miles) southeast of Salta.
It struck about 17.9 kilometers (11.1 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Strong shaking could be felt in the area of the earthquake, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Because the earthquake struck on land, there is no tsunami threat. SOURCE
