As reported in the Daily Camera, the sinkhole, measured at 15-feet-deep, opened around 5 a.m. and nearly devoured a white SUV in the process: ABC 7 reports that the sinkhole opened up in an area developed over coal mine shafts from the Simpson mine, which was one of the largest in Lafayette history. The Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety says that it will take months to fix the sinkhole, and that the hole will be temporarily filled until then.
