ShowImageSpanish lawmakers on Tuesday urged their government to recognize Palestine as a state, albeit only when the Palestinians and Israel negotiate a solution to their long-running conflict. The symbolic motion, which echoes similar votes last month in Britain and Ireland, received the backing of all the political groups of the lower house. PLO Executive Committee member, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, welcomed the positive vote of the Spanish Parliament calling on its government to recognize the State of Palestine: “On behalf of the people of Palestine and our leadership, I would like to thank everyone who worked to bring about this vote. The recognition of Palestine and its people is an investment in peace and constitutes a substantive contribution to a just peace.” More
