MARIELocated about 500 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, Hurricane Marie is expected to maintain a west-northwest heading over the next five days, remaining a safe distance from the Mexican Pacific coast. Only the tiny offshore islands of Socorro and Clarion are in its path. In fact, as of the 8 pm Pacific advisory, Marie is 195 miles south-southwest of Socorro Island. Marie is a powerful, major hurricane, exhibiting wind speeds of 150, making it a solid Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale. While not directly affecting land, large swells should begin propagating to the Mexican Pacific coast this weekend, including the southern Baja Peninsula continuing into next week, then to the Southern California coast by Tuesday. These swells will bring a danger of rough surf and rip currents to area beaches, as well as coastal flooding. More
