Palestinian President Abbas, April 1, 2014
Top Israeli officials slammed Palestinian President Abbas, saying his speech on Saturday was the last nail in the coffin of the peace process. According to them, Israel made honest efforts to extend negotiations and posed no conditions while Abbas formed an alliance with Hamas and set out a series of preconditions he knows would never be accepted by Israel. “In his speech, Abbas recycled conditions like a construction freeze in Jerusalem or negotiating borders first, even though we made it clear to him a week ago that these are unacceptable,” the top officials added. Earlier on Saturday, Abbas said he was still ready to extend the stalled peace talks, as long as Israel met his long-standing demands to free prisoners and halt construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
