Forget the chapel or the sanctuary, an East Tennessee church is serving beer while delivering its sermon at the bar. On Wednesday night, people gathered at the Open Chord brewhouse and music venue in Knoxville. People enjoyed drinks and the sound of music, along with the sound of praise. “If you want to have a drink while you praise God, who cares,” said local Joshua Nails. The message at The Point Church is to come as you are and that it’s okay to not be okay.

“To make that a reality, we show up at the bar every once in a while and have church there because it really is okay to come as you are and enjoy a beer with your friends and also worship Jesus,” said worship leader at The Point Emilie Finke. There are mixed emotions about having a church service in a bar. Some think it’s a great opportunity to reach people who may not walk into a church.
