The Minnesota Department of Education approved a transgender toolkit that lets male students who identify as girls use the girls bathroom. “A policy that requires an individual to use a bathroom that does not conform to his or her gender identity punishes that individual for his or her gender nonconformance,” the document reads, quoting a court case.
The toolkit also advises teachers to refer to students as “scholars” rather than girls or boys, and the prom king and queen as “prom ambassadors.” “Schools should not assume a student’s name or pronoun,” the toolkit says.
