Virginia Beach city schools have postponed a gay-pride assembly scheduled at Cox High School today following a last-minute complaint by a recently-elected city school board member. The Virginian-Pilot reports that in-coming board member Victoria Manning emailed the school board chair on Saturday after reading a story in the paper about the planned
assembly. Manning said the event would set a negative precedent and also noted “this is a controversial subject and I do not believe it is appropriate to hold a gay pride event during instructional time.” She added “I fully support the gay club holding meetings after school but not during instructional time.” The Gay-Straight Alliance at Cox planned the optional event in response to a bullying situation at the start of the school year. What can I say?? Here goes. When I was In high school we never had any of these extreme social problems!! We were focused on our classes, school activities, and planning our future. If you were caught smoking in the boys room, you were sent to the principals office. 2nd offense was a 3-Day suspension, and 3rd offense you were expelled. If you need clarification on your sexuality, discuss with your parents! Go to Local public park and hold your rally there. What’s wrong with you kids? An employer wants to know what work qualifications you have to offer. Conduct your personal friendships outside the workplace and classrooms
What can I say? When I was a kid, we went to school to learn and set goals for our future. Get clarification and stability about your sexuality from your parents or a trained counselor. We rarely dealt with extremists inside the school. We respected the groundrules. If caught smoking in the Boys Room, you went to the principal’s office. 2nd offense was a 3-day suspension. 3rd offense was expulsion from school. If you want to have a rally go to the local public park. You have choices. When you apply for employment the employer wants to know your work qualifications. Conduct your personal relationships outside the work environment and the classroom. Simple.
