(By J.Lee Grady) Those who walk in the fullness of the Holy Spirit have access to the nine “power gifts” mentioned in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. These gifts include prophecy, speaking in tongues, miracles and healing—and many Christians are eager to receive these supernatural manifestations of God’s power. While we know God can perform such wonders today, we also know Satan can counterfeit them. Jesus Himself warned that false prophets and false teachers would gain followers
because of their supernatural powers. Jesus said: “For false christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matt. 24:24). So how do we know the difference between a true Christian who operates in the power to heal or perform miracles and an imposter who relies on trickery, manipulation, sensationalism or sorcery to deceive crowds? The gift is different from the discernment through knowing God’s Word and maturity. Both allow one to discern good from evil, but the gift goes beyond that in many ways; it is more permanent/ongoing, and it supernaturally reveals evil spirits even without any action or words on their part.
Too often the church ignores the real gift and just acknowledges the acquired discernment. Why? Because few churches or pastors are willing to submit to such scrutiny and exposure from the Holy Spirit, and in fact they mainly mock and delegitimize Christians given the gift of discerning of spirits. Too bad, as God intended it to be a way to help keep the church body free from ‘leaven’ and evil intruders. As one with this gift, I can tell you it makes every day life very difficult, knowing lies and intentions and evil influences in friends and coworkers.
If you walk in the Spirit, the gifts of discernment will manifest. But you need to deny your self, the works of the flesh, like arrogance, pride, perversion speech, and corrupt mind. You need to renew your mind with truth n love a life pleasing to God.
