Data shows the number of adults with the disease has risen by 1.5 million in the past ten years, with GPs now reporting 3.6 million patients aged 17 and older on their records. Interestingly there is a theory that the epidemic of diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, Chrohns disease, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, kidney disease, thyroid issues, infertility, different cancers and arthritis is caused by vitamin d deficiency. They now say that vitamin d is actually a master hormone and deficiency can cause the onset of “human hibernation response”. Your body will actually raise the sugar levels in your blood, much like putting sugar in a gas tank, to keep your blood from freezing during very cold periods. Of course if your vitamin d levels never rise these blood sugar levels damage the body and you need medication to control your condition. If you wear sunscreen above spf 6, none of the UVB rays from the sun can penetrate the body so it can make vitamin D. I had symptoms of Crohns disease for 4 years and was completely gluten intolerant, and after taking 5000 units of vitamin d per day for 4 months I eat anything I want and feel great. I believe the government now recommends at least 4000 units of vitamin d daily, when it used to be 400. Yes, you can get your D from sunshine alone, but if you are deficient they say it’s better and faster to supplement. Certain medications interfere with vitamin d absorption, like coumadin or any medication that messes with vitamin K levels (you need vitamin K to absorb vitamin D). Also medications like viagra have been associated increased risk of skin cancers, so if you take a lot of pharmaceuticals you should probably only take supplements and stay out of the sun.
