Data shows the number of adults with the disease has risen by 1.5 million in the past ten years, with GPs now reporting 3.6 million patients aged 17 and older on their records. There has been an increase of 137,000 in the past year alone – largely due to an explosion in cases of Type 2 diabetes. Experts warn that the debilitating condition is now reaching crisis proportions.
