Four people have died and one remains missing in Greece due to flash flooding. The torrential rainfall has caused extensive damage in some cities, sweeping cars out to sea. Rescue crews received more than 1,000 distress calls and rescued 74 people. The heavy rain was caused by a ‘blocking’ pattern in the upper atmosphere. An area of low pressure aloft is stuck over southern Italy as a large high-pressure ridge builds north of it.
