Many Georgians are in an uproar and Hundreds of them turned out Monday night at the Historic Newton County Courthouse in opposition to a Muslim Mosque and Cemetery. Now, Islamic community leaders are addressing the plans for the mosque. The Mosque and Cemetery were approved by the County’s Zoning Division under current zoning regulations which allowed for a place of worship. A fire storm of anger erupted when citizens learned the Muslim compound was approved without public input.

In reaction, the Board of Commissioners set up a public forum for people to have their say on what appears to be a done deal. “I would like to say that there is no camp, everyone will have access,” Imam Mohammad Islam told the news station. He said the plans call for a 4,000-square-foot mosque with a 2,500-square-foot preparation center. His congregation includes mostly Bangladeshi Muslims, the news station reported. The imam did not rule out expanding to a new school in the neighborhood in the future. CONTINUE
