The deadly Brain-eating Amoeba has been confirmed in Florida as a swim in an unsanitary body of fresh water has resulted in a Broward County resident’s hospitalization for a deadly infection caused by a brain-eating amoeba, officials announced this week.  “[Florida health officials have] confirmed a local case of Naegleria fowleri in an individual from Broward County,” said Mara Gambineri,

a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health. “At this time, we believe that the individual contracted the infection after swimming in unsanitary water on a single private property.” The infected person’s name, age and gender have not been disclosed nor has the location of the contaminated body of water.
