During a press conference Friday afternoon, Mayor Jim Kenney said the previous night’s shooting of a police officer had “nothing to do with being a Muslim or following the Islamic faith,” despite the suspect claiming he did it in the name of Islam. Kenney said:

“In no way, shape or form does anyone in this room believe that Islam or the teaching of Islam has anything to do with what you have see on that screen. That is abhorrent, it’s terrible, and it does not represent the religion in any way, shape, or form or any of its teachings. This is a criminal with a stolen gun who tried to kill one of our officers, has nothing to do with being a Muslim or following the Islamic faith.”

Earlier, he said on Twitter that the shooting “had nothing to do with any faith.” Kenney went on to tell reporters: “There are too many guns on our streets, and I think our national government needs to do something about that.” Police Commissioner Richard Ross said during the press conference that suspect Edward Archer pledged allegiance to ISIS in his confession.
